Cradle to Cradle was developed by Prof. Michael Braungart (EPEA) and architect William McDonough (MBDC) and has since become a well-known sustainability concept. The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII) was founded in 2011 and manages the Cradle to Cradle product standard. Headquartered in San Francisco, the institute is led by an independent board of directors. Mosa has been a Cradle to Cradle Charter Organization since early 2011. The charter establishes the company’s commitment to further implementing Cradle to Cradle in all its products and processes.

With Cradle to Cradle there is no waste, no shortages and no limitations. It is a design concept predicated on the unlimited reuse of raw materials (waste is food), the use of renewable energy and the stimulation of diversity. Mosa states that goal is to launch a new industrial revolution which ensures that production and manufacturing have a positive impact on society, the economy and our planet.

Mosa is the first ceramic tile company to gain full Cradle to Cradle Silver certification for its entire tile collection. Years of research and investment have yielded even more results, including ISO 14001 certification, the Dubokeur seal and registration in the Netherlands’ National Environmental Database. Mosa tiles can also contribute to sustainable building certifications, such as LEED and GPR Gebouw. LEED Version 4 includes Cradle to Cradle products and opting for Mosa’s certified wall and floor tiles can now yield up to two points in Materials & Resources Credit 4, Building Disclosure and Optimization – Material Ingredients. Thanks to sustainable production methods, use of secondary materials (recycled content) and independently verified EPDs, there are several ways that Mosa tiles contribute to LEED points.

According to the company, Mosa tiles are chemically inert and very durable which gives them an extremely long lifespan. They can last for hundreds of years, during which time their appearance and technical quality will remain completely unchanged when subjected to normal use. Mosa utilizes an independently verified lifecycle analysis (LCA) that attests to the sustainable character of its tiles.
